It’s time once again for Camp NaNoWriMo. This year, NaNo is holding it in April! Yay! My birth month. And yes, I do celebrate all month long. 😀
This year, I’m pushing to finish the first draft of my current WIP and lay the foundation for the next book in the series. Writing is normally a lonely business, but having to report in daily to others who are pushing themselves, can definitely be a driving factor.
Especially if you’re competitive, like me. That’s a fact most people don’t know about me. I keep my competitive streak well hidden…most of the time.
But there are times when a little friendly rivalry goes a long way to keep the mental tools sharp. Besides, it’s more a cooperative relationship than an antagonistic one.
Here’s how it works. A group of us get together and report in daily to do writing sprints. The sprints last anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. At the end of each one, there’s a number check. Accolades for those who did really well and encouraging (sometimes nagging) words for those who hit a roadblock.
But it’s all in the spirit of fun and writing. There have even been Friday nights that were wine and sprints. Those were quite fun, although, I must admit, I don’t write quite as much on alcohol. 😉 (In my case, those sprints netted me exactly zero words. Ouch.)
So watch the number counter to the right for the next thirty days. My goal is to hit 85k by midnight April 30.
And that’s quite a goal, considering tomorrow starts Spring Break for Frickas and Frackus, the lights of my reality who are still young enough to want to spend the holiday with mommy. 🙂 So, it’s going to be a balancing act this week, but a fun one.
Like I said, it’s my birthday month and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate.
So, are you doing NaNo? And how do you celebrate your birthday?
